Learn About Hidden Copper Toxicity

Corroded copper pipes against a wall

In my personal journey to health and wellness, I discovered that I have what is called “hidden copper” on my hair mineral test through my Mineral-Nutritional Balancing program. Hidden copper is a condition that is quite common.  In Mineral-Nutritional Balancing terms, "hidden" copper actually I have a lot of excess copper in my system. Because the copper readings are so very low, indications are that my body's detoxification pathways are blocked and I am actually accumulating copper and not releasing copper.

I have struggled with hypothyroidism, PMS, constipation and a life-long sugar addiction, with resulting candida infections for many years and was amazed to find that the source is excess “hidden” copper in my body. This condition can be corrected over time with a properly interpreted Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis, targeted supplementation, targeted detoxification protocols and targeted dietary intervention.

This pattern is quite common among children (think hyperactivity, autism, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia), and recently I have especially noted young girls who are diagnosed with anxiety/depression are typically provided prescription drugs and/or other traditional therapies to combat their condition without any lasting positive results.

What is copper? Copper is a soft, reddish gold element, that is a great conductor for heat and electricity. In fact, its main use is in electrical wires and motors. Copper is also used to make coins and is mixed with other metals to make bronze and brass.

Copper is vital for health and most people get too much of it. So much, that it becomes what is called “bio-unavailable” (even though it is in the body, the body is not utilizing it). Copper is also important for iron metabolism and a copper imbalance is associated with anemia.

Sources of copper that might surprise you are: Being born with high copper, having a zinc deficiency, avocadoes, nuts, seeds, beans and grains, chocolate, copper water pipes, copper sulfate which is added to your water supply and sprayed on crops as fungicides and pesticides, copper intrauterine devices, birth control pills, swimming pools and hot tubs.

In my case, my 40-year quest to solve my severe PMS, (then solve my severe menopause symptoms) finally led me to Mineral-Nutritional Balancing.. Although I was already in menopause by the time I discovered Mineral-Nutritional Balancing and I was disappointed I did not find this program much earlier in my life, as I am sure it would have helped me when all the following interventions failed me: traditional medicine, acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine, vitamin therapy, bio-identical hormone therapy, chiropractic, naturopathy and a wide variety of diets, including veganism and vegetarianism. Sigh. At least I can work on my other symptoms: hypothyroidism, candida, sugar cravings, constipation, trouble sleeping and brain fog. This is where I have finally found some relief.

The way copper works in my situation (I am a severe slow oxidizer) is that although I have plenty of copper floating around in my system—in fact too much—and even with all that copper in my body I am deficient in available copper. The entire objective is to help my body come into balance so that it can use the copper it needs and eliminate or dump the excess copper that is in my system. This has been a slow process for me, and I know I am eliminating copper when I have trouble sleeping or have challenges slowing down. Sometimes I get irritable and feel a bit anxious. The best “side effect” has been a dramatic reduction in my sugar cravings and long-standing candida infection. I can go for weeks without consuming sugar, and this is a majorly big deal for me since I couldn’t go one day without consuming something with sugar in it. My sensitivity to cold temperatures is improving. My constipation is greatly improving. My sleeping has improved (yet there are times I do not sleep well). I haven’t really slept well for at least 35 years, so what I now have is a great improvement over what I didn’t have before!

I have never really been an anxious person, so I cannot speak to that. I do know this is a big concern for a lot of people, especially women. Clients who participate in Mineral-Nutritional Balancing see improvement with anxiety.

I am looking forward to a brighter future where I can consume small amounts of sugar or chocolate instead of being driven to consume large amounts at one time. I see light at the end of the tunnel because I am having success in this area for the first time in my life.
